Amputee
A person who has had all or part of a limb removed/amputated or is born without the limb.

Ankle joint
Joint the tibia, the fibula and the talus.

Ankle disarticulation
Amputation of the lower limb at the ankle joint.

Deficiency
State in which one or more bones of a limb are totally absent, partially absent or hypoplastic.

Foot
That part of the lower limb distal to the ankle.

Hip joint
Ball and socket joint between the head of the femur and the acetabulum in the os coaxae.

Knee joint
Joint between the femur and the tibia, including the joint between the femur an the patella.

Knee disarticulation
Amputation of the lower limb at the knee joint.

Lower limb prosthesis
Prosthesis used to replace the whole or part of the lower limb.

Orthotist
Person who, having completed an approved course of education and training, is autorized by an appropriate national authority to design, measure and fit orthoses.

Orthotics
Science and art involved in treating patients by the use of orthoses.

Orthotist / Prosthetist
Person who, having completed an approved course of education and training, is autorized by an appropriate national authority to design, measure and fit orthoses and prostheses (also known as CPO).

Partial foot amputation
Amputation of the lower limb distal to the ankle joint.

Prosthesis
Externally applied device to replace wholly, or in part, an absent or deficient limb segment.

Prosthetics
Science and art involved in treating patients by the use of prostheses.

Prosthetist
Person who, having completed an approved course of education and training, is autorized by an appropriate national authority to design, measure and fit prostheses.

Spinal orthosis
Orthosis applied to all or part of the trunk, head and neck and their intermediate joints.

Upper limb prosthesis
Prosthesis used to replace the whole or part of the upper limb.

Transtibial amputation - below knee amputation
amputation of the lower limb between the knee joint and the akle joint (also known as BK).

Transfemoral amputation - above knee amputation
Amputation of the lower limb between the hip joint and knee joint (also known as AK).
